NEWS LETTER 1ST SEPTEMBER 2008
In Thailand we are constantly subjected to Political intrigue and today is no exception. We had a general election which produced a Government of the past Thai Rak Thai Party; the winners approached six minority parties to form a coalition party. The new Prime Minister was thought to be the puppet of the old ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, but time has proven he has his own voice and has managed to retain control of the political arena for the last 8 months.
The opposition has become dissatisfied with the way in which the elected Government is acting and due to its inability to influence political events has decided to make moves in a non political way via civil disobedience. The current situation is serious, Bangkok has become the oppositions bedrock of violence demonstrations, last week saw an escalation which in turn resulted in an emergency meeting of parliament. The current Cabinet was supported by its coalition partners, so in theory the alliance remained strong and this should have brought to an end the political upheaval.
But that was wishful thinking; the unrest is now spreading nationwide. The Unions of have put their members behind the law breakers and are about to bring the entire country to a standstill in a final attempt to replace the current Government. No power, no water with a strong possibility of fuel shortages as the railways comes to a standstill. This is our position and its one which is making business decision almost impossible.
We as a company have to pass on views to our clients; we need to input facts which we believe will settle the inevitable worries of the current and future clients. We believe that Thailand has a truly elected Government which was improving on a month by month basis, although there are a few issues, we as foreigner, would like to see improvement for our lives here in Thailand, the country was settling down and making headway in these difficult economic time of a possible world recession.
It is very difficult to anticipate political moves as with the world in freefall even our own political leaders were struggling with the road map of future development of Thailand. Oil prices have made a major impact on us as a country without oil reserves, but with subsidies the Government has been able to stabilize the economic performance and we in line with most Asian countries were moving forward albeit at a slower pace than expected, we were making headway.
Our advice is to view this current situation as a necessary stand off by each political party, the winner will then be able to govern with the utmost power and until new elections they should be allowed to put in place their political objectives. We support democracy and hope that this terrible situation will soon change. Only good will come of this and it is clear the future of this robust country is only going to get better. We still believe that the investment in Thailand will be safe and rewarding, our price of property is well below the average worldwide and we are moving towards a much higher standard of living which in turn means good capital appreciation, a wonderful country to holiday, so rentals will be strong. Our advice is invest now as it will prove to be the best move you can make.
